The youtube video on this page will explain how to use file shredders to delete files from your computers hard drive, USB sticks, external drives and memory cards.
If you value your privacy then a shredder is the perfect tool to safely delete personal information, especially useful if you are going to resell your computer or any peripheral devices.
Most users delete files through the Recycle Bin and Windows merely removes the reference to these files which are easily recovered using freely available file recovery tools.
Before using a File Shredder, ensure that you have saved any copies of personal data etc that you wish to keep.
The use of a file shredder offers you many shredding options, from a simple One Pass to the most secure 'Guttman Algorithm' which is 35 passes. This will make shred any files and folders beyond recovery.
There is also an option to 'Shred Free Disk Space' which will overwrite ALL items previously deleted through the Recycle Bin.
This is also very useful if you are planning on reselling your computer or peripherals, as you may think that a format will remove all information and restore the OS to its original settings, yet most Recovery Software programs can recover the files.
If you use 'Shred Free Disk Space', click on 'Shredder Settings', then click the 'Algorithms' tab and using the drop down menu select 'Guttman algorithm 35 passes'.
This in no way removes any programs / files / folders from your computer, it merely overwrites previously deleted data with the secure algorithm.
Use such programs with caution as the files shredded will be beyond recovery!
