If a criminal group decides they want to do whatever they do, but they want to outrank their competition or drive traffic from legitimate site to their trap. Who is stop them from using numbers to rate legitimate sites bad . Then rate their bad site good.

Now that they have the top rating and all the competition has red ratings they go out and buy a WOT Trust Seal.

Now when a WOT user does a search he sees a site with the best rating and owns a Wot Seal of trust and will happily and feeling safe travel there in fall into the trap feeling they are protected.

Now WOT can take down the information if they find out its fraudulent but how would they know?

If a website operation is taken down or shutdown that will get rid of the the danger for a short time.

But before it is it will undoubtedly have caught many users in a trap.

And even if the website is shut down the criminals will just set up elsewhere and do the same thing again.

But the biggest tragedy is the innocent sites will still have bad ratings and WOT won’t take the bogus ratings down.

And that is the tragedy and the diservice of the WOT rating system.

Mark - WOT ratings are not determined purely on a sites rating. There are many other factors that are used and many trusted sources to determine whether a site is legitimate or not.
A site can be bad yet have a lot of ratings that state it is good, but the reputation goes far beyond users ratings.
If WOT was to use users ratings only, then there would be many bad sites showing as safe and legitimate, but this is not the case and every day there are thousands of new unsafe sites created. So user ratings only play a small part in the equation of determining the quality of a site.
Many are aware that there are many fraudulent sites, and they get closed down and setup elsewhere, new name, new server and so on, but as I have already said, the algorithm used is not dependant on user ratings.
Innocent sites also get rated badly by competitors to try and shift the focus away from them and to fraudulent sites, but this is a rarity and yes, there are innocent sites that are rated by users and others as being bad when they are not but trusted sources also play a large part in a sites integrity.
There are also specific qualifications and criteria to be met before a site can purchase a site seal, and this is also controlled and verified that the site is indeed an honest site as well as meeting other specific criteria.
You should take your query into the forum where you will get a more in-depth explanation of how the system actually works.

Colin
