Avast Update Flawed
Avast issued a VPS update at 12:15am GMT on December 3. This update was flawed and started to flag hundreds of files as Trojans, more specifically as "Win32:Delf-MZG" or "Win32:Zbot-MKK".
This applied to Avast 4.8 and Avast 5 Beta versions. My computer would not boot initially, but a reboot to last known good configuration worked and I updated to the latest release and rebooted normally.rn
The VPS update 091203-0 was responsible for this and it affected sound card drivers, media players, skype and Spybot S&D as well as several other programs that users have installed.
The update also brought a crippling threat to some Windows operating systems. Possible workarounds for affected systems are to open up msconfig and uncheck Avast scripts in the services tab and the startup tab.
Go to the Avast settings and right click on icon fourth down, then go to the troubleshooting tab. Check the second box "Delay of loading of avast".
For those that are affected a new update was released at 5:50am GMT on December 3 - VPS update 091203-1.
This has corrected the issues caused by the previous update and Avast users are urged to invoke an update as soon as possible.
Simply left click on the Avast icon and select update.
